Description

Nant-y-Gwyrddail Bach is a sub-Medieval house and byre, likely dating from the late 16th century. It is a single-storey structure built from rubble, partially resting on boulder foundations, and features continuous slate roofs with crude rubble gable parapets.

The house, located on the left side, has an entrance to the right of the center on the main southeast side, which includes stable doors. There is a square window opening to the left with a boarded internal shutter. At the rear, a large projecting lateral chimney has been reduced to wall-plate level, and there is a slit window in the upper northwest gable.

The byre section on the right has a central entrance flanked by slit-lights with projecting stone cills, and there is a blocked loading bay at the northeast gable end.

Inside, the building has a two-bay layout with a heavy pegged truss, originally of the queen-strut type, although the queen struts are now missing. There is a large, rough chamfered transverse beam with a long groove on the underside, which likely related to a partition that divided the space into an unheated parlour on the right and a hall on the left. The hall features a large blocked fireplace on the rear wall with a huge chamfered inglebeam. The ceiling has stopped-chamfered beams that are further supported at the gable ends by transverse beams, with the left side supported by a crude corbel stone. The purlins and rafters in the roof have probably been replaced in the 19th century.

The interior also includes a rubble dividing wall between the domestic area and the byre, which is unusually located uphill. The byre has a three-bay cruck roof with pegged cruck-spurs. Originally, the space was ceiled over to include a hay-loft; the right-hand tie beam survives, chamfered and showing evidence of former floor joists, while the left-hand tie beam has been cut off at the ends.
