Description

Pant-Phylip Farmhouse is a one-and-a-half storey vernacular farmhouse located 0.5 kilometers southeast of Arthog village, above the Arthog waterfalls. It can be accessed via a steep, winding farm track that branches off from a metalled lane leading from the A493 at the northern boundary of Arthog, eventually joining the Ffordd Ddu beneath Cader Idris.

The farmhouse dates back to 1731 and features three windows. It is constructed of rubble with a modern slate roof, and has rubble gable parapets with moulded kneelers and a moulded eaves cornice. The tall stacks are capped with moulding and weather coursing. The central entrance is flat-arched, showcasing pronounced slate-stone voussoirs and a moulded label, with a modern part-glazed door. The fenestration remains unaltered, although the glazing is modern. The three upper windows break the eaves and are set within large gabled rubble dormers, also with moulded kneelers. Above the central dormer is a stone tablet inscribed with the date 1731, initials E O M, and bird decoration. The left gable features a rubble plinth and battering. On the downhill side, there is a narrow plain-glazed light. Below this, a basement has a deeply-recessed boarded door to the left with a pegged doorcase, while to the right is a former entrance with voussoirs, now converted into a modern window. The rear roof pitch has four modern skylights. A modern lean-to addition at the rear is not included in this description. The interior was not accessible during the inspection.
