Description

Ty'n-y-Coed is a large, two-storey house with attics, dating from the 18th century. It is constructed of snecked dressed rubble with limestone detailing, and has slate roofs with deep eaves supported by decorative iron brackets. The house is built on a continuous plinth and has a continuous cornice band, with the upper walls slightly jettied out.

The symmetrical main (west) front has three bays, the central, recessed entrance bay flanked by wings that end as canted bays. These wings have hipped roofs with lead flashing and iron finials in a foliate design. The front features large, four-pane sash windows to each floor, with stopped-chamfered reveals, shouldered-arched heads, and expressed segmental relieving arches above, along with decorative quoins. The three-window entrance bay has a central, round-arched entrance with finely moulded sandstone decoration, including a carved tympanum bearing a shield with the DD monogram. Polished granite columns flank the entrance, with plain bases and topped-chamfered reveals and naturalistic foliage capitals. The entrance has multi-pane double doors with decorative ironwork. The ground floor of the entrance bay is covered by a triple-arched loggia with highly-moulded round-arched openings featuring keystones carved with rosettes. The columns supporting the loggia have solid, chamfered bases with a decorative balustrade, and a dentilated cornice continues with a further balustrade to a flat lead roof. A French window on the left-hand first floor provides access to the loggia. Two steeply-pitched wooden dormers are present in the main roof, with deep verges supported on scrolled brackets and decorative finials, pendentives, and cusping; moulded stopped-chamfered bargeboards are also present. Similar dormers are found on the flanking bays and on a further bay on the south face. A large central fleche rises from the roof, with honeycomb slate cladding to the lower section and ribbed leading to the upper portion, featuring triple-arched wooden slatted openings on each face. A decorative iron weather vane sits atop the fleche. Four tall stacks have moulded capping. Flat cast iron downpipes are present, along with square decorative hoppers. A single-storey projection steps down to the north face, with a half-hipped roof to the north and an angled side to the northeast. The rear elevation shows a slightly advanced gabled wing to the right and a plain entrance with a shouldered arch to the left, with window fenestration similar to the front.

The house is set behind a long, raised terrace with a balustraded stone edge and terracotta columns with cushion capitals acting as balusters. The interior was not accessible during inspection in November 1994, but is reported to contain fine fireplaces.
