Description
SW Lodge to Garth Angharad is a square one-and-a-half storey gate lodge built around 1912 to serve Garth Angharad. The design shows the influence of Clough Williams Ellis. It has a centralized plan and is constructed of snecked rubble with a pyramidal small-slate roof that slightly overhangs at the eaves. There is a square central stack with a moulded plinth and corners that are set back. The lodge sits on a slightly projecting plinth.
The west entrance front features an entrance to the right and a 12-pane flush casement window adjacent to it, all under a continuous stone lintel. The door is boarded and grooved. In front, there is a projecting single-storey verandah-type porch with restrained Chinese-style openwork wooden supports that carry three arches, the central one being wider and depressed. The porch has plain balustrading and a flat lead roof with bracketed eaves. To the left, there is another 12-pane flush casement window with a plain stone lintel.
Above the entrance, there is a large and distinctive centrally-placed squared timber oriel window that breaks the eaves, with 10 light glazing arranged in two levels, six panes per light, and a flat lead roof. This feature's extraordinary size may relate to a specific function of the upper room, which could have served as a dining room for shoot lunches. The north face has tripartite and two-part windows, with a 12-pane flat-roofed dormer to the left that also breaks the eaves. The south face features further 6 and 12-pane windows, with a centrally-placed dormer similar to the others. There is a contemporary flat-roofed single-storey extension at the rear.
