Description
This barn, located 70 metres south of Stanstead Hall, dates from the 15th century and 19th century. It is timber framed, covered with weatherboarding, and has a roof made of handmade red plain tiles. The barn is aligned east-west and consists of two sections. Originally, it had eight bays and was only aisled on the north side, but it is now partly aisled on the south side as well. There is one gabled midstrey on the north and two on the south.
The original section features jowled posts, closely spaced tiebeams, and heavy arched bracing in the north aisle wall, along with remnants of long internal bracing in the former south wall. It has a crownpost roof with chamfered posts and axial bracing, which has been rebuilt. The 19th-century western extension has unjowled posts and primary straight bracing.
