Description
This is a barn dating from the 18th century, located approximately 40 metres south-east of Valley Farmhouse in Wethersfield. The barn is timber framed and features weatherboarding and plaster on a high plinth made of red brick in Flemish bond, resting on a base wall of pebble rubble. It has a roof covered with corrugated asbestos and consists of five bays aligned roughly northwest to southeast, with a midstrey on the northeast side. The roof is half-hipped at the southeast end and at the midstrey. The hardwood frame is jointed and pegged, with face-halved and bladed scarfs in the wallplates. Originally, the roof did not have tiebeams; instead, it used bolted knees to brace the wallposts to the principal rafters, along with clasped purlins. Later, tiebeams were inserted for reinforcement. The height of the plinth varies from 1 to 1.5 metres due to the slope of the site.
