Description
Danes Vale Farmhouse is a house dating from the 16th century, substantially altered in the 18th century. It is timber framed and has plaster walls, covered by a roof of handmade red clay tiles. The original structure consists of a three-bay range facing south, featuring an internal stack against the rear wall of the left bay, and a three-bay crosswing to the left, extending to the rear to form an L-shaped plan. An 18th-century rear range runs parallel to the main block, completing a rectangular layout. A 19th-century jettied and gabled extension was added to the middle of the front elevation. A 20th-century, apsidal conservatory sits to the left. The house has two storeys and an attic. All windows on the front elevation are 19th-century casements with grouped diagonal shafts. A single 18th-century, three-light window with a wrought iron casement and spring latch is visible on the left return wall, at first-floor level. Internal features include jowled posts, close studding with curved braces trenched to the inside, chamfered beams with lamb's tongue stops, a clasped purlin roof with arched wind bracing and cambered collars. The interior contains two fireplaces: one large wood-burning hearth facing to the right, and another facing to the left that has been much altered. The interior has been extensively treated with 19th-century panelling and carvings, incorporating some elements of the original timber frame.
