Description

TL 73 NW TOPPESFIELD HARROW HILL, South Side 3/24 Le Hurst Farmhouse GV II

House, c.1600, altered in C20. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 4 bays aligned NW-SE, with axial chimney stack in second bay from SE end, forming a lobby-entrance to the NE. Original stair tower to SW of stack. One-bay extension to NW of main range, soon after initial construction. Single-storey extension to SW of SE bay, with chimney stack at the junction, C19/20. 2 storeys and attics. NE elevation, tiled hipped porch, C20, and 3-window range of C20 casements. The lower SE room has 2 blocked original windows each with 2 ovolo mullions, and a richly moulded axial beam with converging stops. Elsewhere, chamfered axial beams with lamb's tongue stops at both floors. The lower NW room has chamfered joists of horizontal section with lamb'stongue stops. Face-halved and bladed scarfs in the wallplates. Octagonal stair post and original rail, balusters missing. RCHM 23.
