Description
Nos. 37 and 39 on Bank Street in Braintree are likely part of a 15th-century timber-framed building that underwent significant alterations and was refronted in 1758. The front is made of red brick with a parapet and a cornice featuring modillions, complemented by gault brick dressings, quoins, and bands. The building stands three storeys tall with cellars and has a total of seven windows arranged in a pattern of 2:3:2. The central section, which has three windows, slightly projects forward and is topped with a modillioned pediment that includes a blocked circular window in the tympanum. The windows are double-hung sashes with distinctive octagonal glazing bars. The central window on the first storey features a brick architrave, while the central window on the second storey has a semi-circular head with a gault brick keystone and impost blocks. There are raised gault brick bands between the first and second storeys. At the rear, there is a long warehouse wing that is timber-framed and plastered, likely from the 18th century. Additionally, at the north end of the east front, there is a covered passageway that reveals some exposed timber-framing and original moulded ceiling beams. Nos. 31, 33, 37, and 39 form a group with No. 40 on the east side.
