Description

The Old Manor House is a late 16th century timber-framed and plastered house with an 18th century cross wing at the north end. It is situated on an island site and is an interesting and picturesque building featuring much original ornamentation. The fronts are now cement rendered, but panels of 17th century pargetting have been preserved on the east and west fronts. The house has three storeys, attics, and cellars, with a two-window range on the east and west fronts of the 16th century block and a one-window range on the 18th century cross wing. The 18th century windows are double-hung sashes with glazing bars, some featuring vertical glazing bars. The west front is double-jettied with moulded fascias on shaped brackets, with the lower bracket at the south end being carved. There are two 17th century pargetted panels, one depicting a Tudor rose and crown and the other a Royal Coat of Arms. The east front was originally double-jettied, and part of the upper jetty survives in a recessed centre panel on the first storey, which contains a 17th century pargetted panel with griffons and a heraldic device surrounded by a floral border. Much of the 17th century pargetting was defaced in the 18th century. The ground storey has been built out with a 20th century shop, and the 18th century cross wing features a 19th century bow window. The roofs are tiled, with one gabled dormer on the east front.
