Description
St Michael's Hospital, formerly the old workhouse, was built in 1837. It is a red brick building with 20th-century wings on the east and west ends. The building has three storeys and a five-window range, with the central part slightly projecting forward. The windows feature double-hung sashes with glazing bars set in plain reveals, while the outer windows on the ground storey have casements. The ground and first storey windows have semi-circular brick arched heads, and the ground storey along with the central three windows on the first storey have keystones. A central doorway is topped by a semi-circular fanlight with ornamental glazing bars and is framed by a wooden doorcase with plain columns and a dentilled cornice. The roof is hipped and covered with slate.
