Description

Gosfield School is a building that was formerly a house, dating from the early to mid 19th century. It is constructed of yellow Suffolk brick and features a hipped grey slate roof on the central range, with hipped roofs on the lower-level wings to the left and right, the left wing having a gabled extension. The building has projecting eaves supported by moulded brackets and four brick chimney stacks on the central range. An iron bell cote is located on the left range, and there is a moulded central band around the building.

The structure is two storeys high, with semi-circular bays on both the right and left sides of the central range. The window arrangement consists of a 2:3:3:1:3:3 pattern of vertically sliding sashes, with long windows in the central bays and a central French window on the left range. The main entrance features a central glazed and panelled door with a round head and a light above, framed by a pedimented stone portico adorned with guttae, triglyphs, and metopes on the frieze, a foliate centre panel, and moulded acroteria. This portico is supported by fluted columns and pilasters and is accessed by steps.

Inside, the building contains panelled shutters, dados, and reveals around the windows and doors, as well as six-panelled doors. There are moulded ceiling cornices and pelmets in some rooms, along with fluted architraves featuring corner patera and pediments on many doors. The interior also boasts marble Adam style fireplaces, fluted pillars in the entrance hall, and a staircase with a wreathed handrail supported by iron balusters. The ceilings are moulded throughout. There are wings of a later date at the rear and left of the building.
