Description

Coleg y Groes, also known as The College, is a Grade II* listed building constructed from roughly coursed rubble with a high plinth and a slate roof featuring a yellow brick gable end and axial stacks. The building is symmetrically designed around a central entrance and was originally set up with three dwellings on either side, facing inward. The entrance bay is advanced and has a high segmental archway leading to the gateway, with an inscription stone positioned above it.

On either side of the entrance, there are three 4-pane sash windows that align with similar windows in hipped dormers on the roof. The courtyard elevation was originally arranged with three single-unit dwellings on either side of the entrance. The left-hand range has a blocked outer doorway, while the two remaining doorways feature timber gabled porches. There is a 4-pane sash window on the left and a later-added canted bay window on the right. The right-hand range has a similar porch at the inner doorway, along with a canted bay window, a 4-pane sash window, and a blocked door to the right.

A lean-to porch has been added at the angle with a single-storey cross wing that forms the eastern boundary of the compound, which was formerly the bakehouse. This is balanced by a low toilet block to the west.

The original 18th-century internal layout remains largely intact, with minor modifications that reflect changing uses. Each of the original dwellings consisted of a single room on each floor, featuring chamfered spine beams in the lower rooms and deep fireplaces (some of which are blocked). Stairs wound in the angle of the chimney breast, although some have since been removed.
