Description
The Ryes is a house that has been converted into a private school. It was built in 1809 by Robert Lugar and later extended and altered in 1884 by F.F. Bishop. The building is constructed from grey gault brick and features a grey slate roof. It stands two storeys high and has three bays, with the center bay recessed and wings on either side. Both wings were originally gabled, but the left wing has since been altered to a hipped roof. The southwest wing, added in 1884, obscures the south front of the building.
The facade has a window arrangement of three: one: one, featuring early and late 19th-century vertical sliding sashes with glazing bars. A notable feature is the original central stone Doric portico, which includes pairs of fluted columns and an entablature. At the east end of the rear, there is a two-storey semi-circular bay window, which also has three early 19th-century vertical sliding sashes with glazing bars, both above and below. The building has wide oversailing eaves supported by paired brackets.
Inside, much of the original detailing remains intact, including doors, fire surrounds, and ceilings. The dining room is particularly notable for its Egyptian columns and pilasters, as well as segmental sashes and shutters. There is also a service wing on the northwest side, which features a large late 19th-century staircase.
