Description
This gas lamp and standard, dating from the late 19th century, is located approximately 18 metres east of the central block of the Atlas Works in Earls Colne. The structure is made of cast iron and sheet metal. The standard features an octagonal lower section with recessed panels, a moulded base and waist, standing about one metre high. Above this, the upper stem is reeded and tapers, adorned with an acanthus design at the neck. It includes two ladder arms and bears the inscription 'The Thames Bank Iron Company, London' in raised letters at the base. The lamp itself is hexagonal, with a scalloped border around its upper edge and two scalloped borders around the vent above, topped with a ball finial. This gas lamp is a rare survival and is in exceptionally complete condition.
