Description

The Institute, located at 28-46 High Street and 2 York Road, is a public hall and ten cottages built in 1854. It features red and gault brick in Flemish bond and is roofed with slate. The building has a symmetrical layout, with a terrace of four cottages on each side of the institute, and a single unit with a semi-octagonal front that projects forward at each end. There are twelve axial stacks, and the hall has a gabled end facing the street.

The hall and end units are constructed of red brick, while the remaining cottages are made of gault brick, each with contrasting dressings. The hall is a single storey, while the cottages are two storeys high. The building has a window arrangement of 1:6:2:6:1 with original sash windows; the end wings feature three sashes with six lights on the ground floor and one sash with 16 lights on the first floor. The other cottages have one sash with 12 lights on the ground floor and two on the first floor. The hall includes two sashes with semi-circular arches and marginal lights, a semi-circular window in the gable, and a round vent above. The doors vary, with Nos. 32, 34, 36, 40, 42, and 44 featuring doorways with rusticated jambs, segmental fanlights, and moulded brick pediments. Nos. 30 and 46 have fanlights in semi-circular arches, and there is one half-glazed door at the right corner.

The front of the hall displays decorative bands of white brick, while the end units have white brick bands and diamond motifs. The gault brick stacks each have a dentil course below the capping. The building was constructed as a Mechanics' Institute and cottages by Harris Hills of Green Farm.
