Description
Edgar's Farmhouse is a house dating from around 1500, with extensions made around 1600, and further alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It features a timber frame with roughcast rendering and a thatched roof. The building has a two-bay hall facing southwest, which includes a late 16th-century axial chimney stack in the left bay and a storeyed service bay beyond. To the right, there is a one-bay extension from around 1600, complete with an end chimney stack. A 20th-century extension is located at the left end, along with a lean-to extension at the rear of this end, which has a slate roof. The farmhouse is one storey with attics and has a plain boarded door at the front, sheltered by a tiled gabled porch from the 20th century. There are three 20th-century casement windows and two additional windows in eyebrow dormers.
Inside, the farmhouse features jowled posts and heavy studding. The original floor in the service bay consists of lodged plain joists, while the hall has an inserted floor from the late 16th century, with transverse and axial beams that are chamfered with lamb's tongue stops. The upper part of the rear hall window, which has three diamond mullions, is preserved and is now located inside the rear extension. The main hearth is lined with modern brick, and there is an edge-halved and bridled scarf in the rear wall plate. The collar-rafter roof is heavily sooted and includes a double collar for smoke venting over the service end. There is also some evidence of a smoke bay that existed before the brick chimney was constructed in the late 16th century.
