Description
Chapel Cottage is a cottage dating from the late 16th century that has been modernised and extended around 1978. It features a timber frame that is plastered and has a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The cottage has three bays facing west and includes a central chimney stack from the 18th century. There is a one-bay extension to the south, added around 1978. The building is one storey high with attics and has three 20th-century casement windows, along with four additional windows in swept dormers. A 20th-century lean-to porch with a side door is also present. Inside, the cottage has jowled posts, heavy studding (some of which has been replaced), and an edge-halved and bridled scarf in the rear wallplate, with the front wallplate splinted over a similar scarf. There are two transverse beams, one of which is ledged and tenoned to the posts, while the other has been reset. An aperture for a bread oven is located in the side of the hearth but has been removed. Most of the original rafters remain, with a modern roof constructed above.
