Description
Newman's Farmhouse is a house that dates back to the 15th century, with alterations made in the 17th and 20th centuries. It features a timber frame that is plastered and has a roof covered with handmade red clay tiles. The building consists of a two-bay hall with an early 17th-century axial chimney stack located in the west bay, a storeyed parlour or solar bay to the east, and a 17th-century storeyed bay to the west. There is a 20th-century rear extension at the eastern end. The main range is one storey with attics, while the west bay has two storeys.
On the ground floor, there are four 20th-century casement windows, and on the first floor, there are four windows, two of which are located in swept dormers. The entrance features a 20th-century door. Inside, the hall has an early 17th-century inserted floor; the west half has chamfered joists with lamb's tongue stops, while the east half has plain joists that were formerly plastered to the soffits. The doorway leading to the parlour in the east bay has a four-centred arched head and is situated in an unusual position. The eastern end of the house is constructed with interrupted tiebeams and features two blocked unglazed windows, with all six diamond mullions still in place. In 1970, the house was nearly derelict and underwent significant renovation.
