Description
Great Lodge Farmhouse is a house that dates back to the early 16th century or earlier, with later alterations and a 19th-century rear addition. It is constructed from timber framing and plaster, featuring panel pargetting. The roof is covered with red plain tiles and includes a central gabled dormer. There is an off-centre red brick chimney stack with diagonal shafts attached. The house has a central hall flanked by two crosswings, with the right wing jettied at the first floor level, supported by curved brackets. The building is two storeys high with attics and has a four-window range, primarily consisting of early 20th-century iron small paned casements, some located in original mullion positions. A 20th-century red tiled gabled porch leads to a panelled door.
Inside, the farmhouse features much exposed timber framing, solid tread stairs leading to the attic, and an original mullion window. The roof structure includes crown posts, and there are chamfered Tudor arch doorheads along with two half arches, likely part of another doorhead. The ground and first floors each have back-to-back inglenook fireplaces, and there is a four-panelled door. It is reputed to have been one of the hunting lodges associated with Hedingham Castle.
