Description

The stable block at Hedingham Castle was built in the 18th century. It is constructed of red brick laid in Flemish bond, showing signs of significant repair, and has a red tile roof.

The stable block has a long rectangular shape and is situated in the north-west corner of the outer bailey, to the north-west of the main house. The lower part of the rear wall serves as a retaining wall for the dry moat, which once held a tennis court associated with the Tudor castle.

This two-storey building features a shallow hipped roof. The first floor of the main east elevation is illuminated by six small windows, which have central glazing bars and gauged brick arches, a characteristic shared by most of the windows. Between the first two pairs of windows, there are two loft doors positioned above the ground-floor doors. The ground floor includes, starting from the left, a small window, a wide timber door that is a later addition with a lunette above for a narrower opening, and three additional windows. Following these are two vertical plank doors with lunettes above, along with a lunette in between, and a wide double-leaf vertical plank door that was inserted in the 20th century. The brickwork in this last section is also from the 20th century. The south gable end has a small window and a bricked-up lunette, along with two bricked-up windows above. A small single-storey brick extension from the 20th century is located on the north gable end. The rear wall is blind, and the lower courses may date back to at least the early 17th century.

Inside, the stable block is divided into three main rooms and retains features such as panelling, stall holders, and iron mangers.
