Description
This is a barn located 80 metres west-northwest of Great Priory Farmhouse, classified as a Grade II* building. It dates from the late 13th century and was altered in the 15th century. The barn is timber framed, with plastered and weatherboarded sections, and features a thatched roof. It consists of six bays aligned northeast-southwest, with two aisles and a midstrey to the southeast. The roof is hipped, and the midstrey has a half-hipped design.
The barn has jowled arcade posts that include trenches for passing braces, although there are no trenches in the aisle ties or tiebeams. The eaves feature a reversed assembly with side jowls. The arcade plates have splayed and undersquinted scarfs, while the wallplates show edge-halved and bridled scarfs. Arched braces support the arcade plates and tiebeams, and the roof is constructed with crownposts and axial braces. The structure is exceptionally complete, reflecting its late 13th-century origins, with the aisle walls and roof rebuilt in the 15th century and the midstrey added during that time.
