TL 7225-7325 PANFIELD BRAINTREE ROAD (west side)

7/4 Barn 80 metres west- 25.11.83 north-west of Great Priory Farmhouse

GV II* Barn. Late C13, altered in C15. Timber framed, plastered and weatherboarded, roof thatched. 6 bays aligned NE-SW, with 2 aisles and midstrey to SE. Roof hipped, midstrey half-hipped. Jowled arcade posts with trenches for passing braces, no trenches in aisle ties or tiebeams. Reversed assembly at eaves, with side jowls. Splayed and undersquinted scarfs in arcade plates, edge-halved and bridled scarfs in wallplates. Arched braces to arcade plates and tiebeams. Crownpost roof with axial braces. The structure is exceptionally complete, indicating a late C13 origin, the aisle walls and roof rebuilt in the C15, and the midstrey added. RCHM 4.
