Description

This is a house dating from the mid-17th century, with an 18th-century extension and a 19th-century alteration. It is timber-framed and rendered, with a red tile hipped roof. Originally a standard three-bay plan with a chimney bay, it was later squared up with a secondary range built in the early to mid-18th century, and further extended in the late 18th century with a two-storey, double-range addition to the left. The 19th-century section has a four-window range of double-hung vertical sash windows in 18th-century openings. A central entrance door is flanked by full-height windows, also from the 19th century. The extension also has a four-window range with original late 18th-century double-hung vertical sash windows with glazing bars. The main block has an early 19th-century veranda with a concave profile and is supported by fluted cast iron columns with foliate capitals, and stop-chamfered plate. An original cast iron ogee gutter is fitted with Lion’s head brackets. On one side elevation, the veranda is interrupted by a 19th-century glazed conservatory with timber mullions, transoms, and mainly glazed margins with an arched glazed roof. Red brick chimney stacks are from the 18th and 19th centuries. Internally, the original timber frame remains, along with 18th and 19th-century architraves and skirtings. A good late 18th or early 19th-century staircase features stick balusters and a wreathed handrail.
