Description

The Church of St Michael features a tower and altar, built in the early 16th century. The nave and chancel were rebuilt in 1871 according to designs by Sir Arthur W. Blomfield and were demolished around 2000.

The materials used include coursed and squared limestone with ashlar sandstone dressings. The tower is square in plan and stands at the former west end of the church, while the altar is rectangular in plan and located at the center of the east end.

The early 16th-century tower consists of three stages, which are not divided externally, and it has an embattled parapet. The parapet once featured carved gargoyles at the corners, but these are no longer present. On the east side, there is a doorway that led to the former nave, which has chamfered jambs and a two-centred arch; above this doorway, the scar of the former gabled nave is visible. The west elevation has one bay of windows for each stage; the first and second stages have flat-arched window surrounds, although the opening in the first stage is blocked. The third stage, which was the bell chamber, has a square-headed window on the east elevation, while the other three sides each feature a trefoil-arched window with a square hoodmould above.

The altar at the east end likely dates from the 16th century and includes an 18cm thick limestone slab. Three sides of the slab have been shaped with beading and a bevel, and two rough crosses are incised towards one end. This slab, known as a 'mensa stone' from the Latin word for table, was broken into two pieces, likely during the Reformation.

Inside the tower, the space has been adapted to accommodate telecommunications equipment, with steel ladders and floors added.
