Description
The Stables, Coach House, and Service Block at Wandlebury, now serving as dwelling houses and a shop for the Cambridge Preservation Trust, were built in the mid to late 18th century. The building features stone dressings to the sills and has a parapetted, hipped roof covered with plain tiles, topped by an octagonal cupola with a clock and leaded windows. There are four small chimneys. The main range has a plan with two rear wings that form three sides of a courtyard, and the structure is two storeys high with attics.
On the north side, there is a round-headed archway for carriage entry in a slightly projecting, pedimented centre bay, with four bays on either side, each containing a casement window on both storeys. The south side has a central block with seven bays, flanked by wings of three bays each. The first floor features small recessed hung sash windows with nine panes, while the ground floor has larger hung sash windows, likely from the 18th century, with thick glazing bars. The original openings for loose boxes in the west wing have been preserved. A memorial to Godolphin Arabian is located under the stable archway and dates from the mid-18th century. The estate at Wandlebury was acquired by Francis, the 2nd Earl of Godolphin, in 1734 and was primarily used as a racing establishment. The main house was demolished in the 1950s.
