Description

The Coach House Block and attached walls to the north of Chiselhampton House is a coach-house and service range built around 1770, possibly designed by Samuel Dowbiggin. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond, with some limestone rubble and ashlar dressings, topped with a roof of Welsh slate and plain tiles. The building has a U-shaped plan and consists of two storeys and one storey.

The symmetrical front features five windows, with a central section of three bays that projects forward from the single-storey flanking bays. The ground floor has four 12-pane sash windows with brick flat arches and a central archway, while the first floor contains three low 6-pane sash windows. Notable architectural details include an ashlar plinth, a storey band, and a cornice. The roof is hipped over the side bays, and the central ridge is topped with a circular brick stack that has spiral moulding. The rear wall is partly made of stone.

At the back, there are single-storey rubble wings that project outward, featuring wide segmental-arched casements. The left wing has been rebuilt, while the right wing includes one bay of accommodation and a three-bay rubble and tiled open shed. Further to the right, there is a brick and tiled range with four coach-house bays and two closed bays that have a plank door flanked by small windows. The interiors have not been inspected. Brick walls, which are partly rebuilt, connect the front to the train house and are lined with lean-to kennels.
