Description

Brookside is a house dating from the late 18th century and early 19th century. Built in a central-stair plan, it is constructed of brick in Flemish bond with limestone rubble and brick dressings, and has a Welsh-slate roof with brick stacks. The 3-window front shows an earlier two-bay section to the right, distinguished by a first-floor sill band and dentil eaves course. A large tripartite sash window is to the right, and a round-arched doorway with a double-leaf panelled door, a delicate Adam-style fanlight above, a 9-pane sash, and a 12-pane sash (cutting through the sill band) are to the left. All windows have gauged arches. A further bay was added to the left, featuring 12-pane sashes. The roof has a gable stack to the right. The sides and rear are constructed of rubble, and there is a 20th-century extension to the rear. Inside, the stair hall contains a sweeping open-well staircase. The drawing room has a dentil cornice and 6-leaf panelled shutters.
