Description
The coach house and stables at Hartham House were built in 1858 and the late 19th century. They are constructed from squared rubble stone with ashlar dressings and feature low-pitched hipped roofs. The main structure surrounds three sides of a south-facing courtyard, with a central block that projects to the north and an additional low range extending north from the northwest corner. The building is primarily single storey, except for a two-storey centerpiece.
The central stable range, dated 1858, includes a pedimented two-storey section with a clock turret, rusticated quoins, and a three-window arrangement of 12-pane windows set in raised segmental-arched surrounds with keystones. There is a central recessed arched doorway framed in a Gibbs surround, and a carved shield is located in the pediment. The wings feature moulded eaves and similar doors flanked by matching windows. The rear of the central block contains a two-storey house with a two-window range and an eaves roof.
On the east side of the courtyard, there is a stable built in a similar style, dated 1888, which has a central eaves-breaking loading door, three windows, and a door below. Each side has a short rusticated link with a doorway and keystone. The coach house on the west side has a similar link to the central range, featuring an ashlar front with five elliptical rusticated arches, a moulded eaves cornice, and boarded doors, with circular lights at each end. To the north of the coach house, facing west, is another low range with a moulded eaves cornice, three lunettes alternating with two doors to the right (one being a 20th-century addition), and a range of five open bays to the left supported by iron columns, dated 1892 on the rear wall.
