Description
Ward's House is a house located on High Street in Sawston, dating from the early 16th century, with an addition from the later 16th century. It was restored in 1885, as indicated by the date on the gable. The building is timber-framed with plaster infill, and it has a brick and stone plinth. The roofs are plain tiled. The rear stack and ridge stack, both with diagonal shafts, have been rebuilt.
The house has two storeys, featuring a two-bay cross wing and a two-bay hall range that jetties out towards the street. There is a lower single-storey extension to the cross wing, which is plastered with a brick plinth and a chimney wall. The street elevation shows some replacement timbers and applied timbers. The left side has a boarded door, and there are two horizontal sliding sash windows on both the ground floor and the first floor.
Inside, the house features crown-post roofs in both ranges, with crown-posts that have plain chamfers and mitre stops. These are braced to the collar purlin and tie beam in the cross wing, and to the collar purlin in the main range.
