Description

The gate piers to Sawston Hall date from the mid-18th century and are made of ashlar limestone. They have a square plan with a plinth and a deep moulded cornice that is capped with ball finials. Each north face features lattice patterned shields. To the east, there is a low wall and a terminating pier, while to the west, there is a pedestrian gateway with a wall at right angles and additional terminating piers. The gate piers are complemented by 19th-century wrought iron gates. These structures and the informal gardens now occupy the site of the original north entrance and courtyard, which was noted in a survey from 1580.
