Description

The tombstones located to the east of the south aisle of St Mary's Church are a group of five, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. They are situated approximately 3 meters from the east wall of the south aisle and are identified from south to north.

The first tombstone is a limestone slab featuring a deeply carved scroll that surrounds a raised plaque with a black painted inscription dedicated to Martha, the wife of John Harris, who died in 1729, noting that "She had 14 children," along with skull and angel head motifs. The second is a limestone slab adorned with olive branches, a central angel head, and a swag surrounding a raised plaque inscribed for Harris, the son of John and Martha Harris, who died in 1706.

The third tombstone is a limestone slab with a scroll and acanthus decoration surrounding a raised oval plaque inscribed for John Harris, son of John and Martha, who died in 1719. The fourth is a small limestone slab with a shaped head, dated 1639, featuring an inscription in capitals painted black that reads, "Here lyeth the Body of John Swan that was minister at Sawston 39 years, and died on the 23rd day of November Anno Domini." The fifth tombstone is a plain limestone slab with a shaped head, inscribed for Susanna Jaggar, who died in 1777.
