Description

The Elsworth War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled and dedicated in 1921, with additions made for the Second World War. It is made of stone and has a square plan.

The memorial is located approximately 10 meters to the west of the west tower of the Church of Holy Trinity, which is listed as Grade I. It features a three-step base supporting a tall plinth with recessed panels that tapers in square section to a cornice adorned with ball decoration. At the top is a capstone that rises to a small, moulded plinth, upon which stands a statue of a weeping angel holding a laurel wreath.

The west face of the plinth bears the inscription 'PRO PATRIA', with the names of the fallen men inscribed in the recessed panel below, along with their ranks. The north face has the inscription 'EUROPEAN WAR / 1914 - 1918 / LEST WE FORGET. / THESE MEN OF OURS, / UNSELFISH, UNAFRAID / WENT TO THE / WORLD-WIDE FIGHT; / FORGET NOT / HOW THEY DIED, / AND HOW WE PRAYED / FOR ENGLAND / AND THE RIGHT'. The east face is inscribed with 'GRANT THEM O LORD / EXTERNAL REST, / AND MAY THE / LIGHT EVERLASTING / SHINE / UPON ' THEM'. The south face commemorates the Second World War with the inscription 'WORLD WAR / 1939 - 1945', along with the names of the men who died and their ranks inscribed below.
