Description

River Farmhouse is a house, now divided into two dwellings, dating from the mid-17th century, with significant additions in 1711. It is constructed of timber framing, rendered in places and soft red brick, with steeply pitched tiled roofs. Two ridge stacks are present, possibly original, and now rendered. One stack has a recessed panel displaying the date 1711, which is now concealed. The house follows a T-plan. It has two storeys and an attic. The east wing, which is the principal range, has gable end casements in the attic, which are now blocked. The windows are largely 20th century, with the exception of two 19th-century twelve-pane hung sashes. The main entrance is located in the angle between the principal range and the rear wing, and there is a further lobby entry to the rear range. A red brick addition, dating to approximately 1711, adjoins the rear range and is parallel to it; it has two storeys and a tiled roof with an end parapet on kneelers. A single-storey timber-framed addition has been made to the rear.

Inside the principal range, which consists of two bays, there is an original soft red brick stack and blocked inglenook hearths. Intersecting main beams are present in each bay, though one room has the beams boxed in. A newel staircase, likely from the 19th century but possibly of 17th-century origin, is located at the side of the stack. The kitchen or rear range also consists of two bays with a lobby entry plan. The roof is of clasped side purlin construction. A dormer was inserted into the rear range in 1828, and the date is visible in glass set within a plaster panel in the dormer gable end.
