Description

38 and 40 Church Street is a house that dates from the late 17th century or early 18th century, which has since been divided into two dwellings. There was originally a panel dated 1738, which has now been removed, and this may indicate the actual date of construction. The building has undergone alterations and additions in the 19th and 20th centuries. It features an exposed timber frame that was previously plaster rendered until it was restored around 1960. The roof is steeply pitched and covered with plain tiles, although the ridge stack has been removed. The house is two storeys high, with the first floor having six small pane windows, the ground floor five small pane windows, and two doorways, all of which are from the 20th century. The slender wall framing is supported by straight bracing, except for the rear wall, which has close studding made of substantial scantling.
