Description
Nos. 55 and 57 on High Street are two dwellings that were originally a single house built in the late 17th century or early 18th century, with a later extension added in the 19th century. The building is timber framed, rendered, and has a tile roof with a grey brick ridge stack positioned at right angles to the ridge. It is two storeys high and features a three-bay lobby entry plan.
On the first floor, there are four 20th-century casement windows. The original doorway opposite the stack has been blocked, while there is a doorway to No. 57 on the right with a boarded door. This dwelling also has one twelve-pane hung sash window and two late 20th-century casements. A noticeable change in height at the eaves level and the plinth indicates that the bay at the north end was built during a different period.
At the rear of No. 55, there is a parlour range added in the early 19th century, which is framed and stuccoed with a slate roof and a grey brick stack. This section is also two storeys high and has two flush frame, twelve-pane hung sash windows on each storey. Inside No. 55, there are details from around 1840, including a fireplace surround.
