Description
Applecote is a cottage dating from the mid to late 17th century, with an extension added in 1949. It features a timber frame that is plaster rendered, topped with a long straw thatch roof that has a half-hipped design and a small red brick ridge stack from around 1700. The cottage consists of three bays, including a narrower pantry or storage bay on the right side. It is one storey high with an attic and includes one dormer. The front has three modern casement windows and a doorway leading to a lobby entry. On the rear wall, there is one early 19th-century horizontal sliding sash window.
Inside, the timber framing is exposed, especially in the left bay, which is open to the roof. The frame is made of uniform and substantial scantling, similar to the rafters of the purlin roof. The main posts have jowled heads, and there is straight downward wall bracing. The hearth and ceiling in the central room are later additions; the hearth is a comparatively small red brick inglenook, and the main beam is of light scantling and unmoulded. The framing is similar to that of No. 61 Station Road, Meldreth.
