Description
The Old Farm is a house that was formerly a farmhouse, dating from the 15th century, with some additions from the mid-16th century and a further extension from the 17th century. It features a timber-framed and plastered structure, with exposed timber framing on the south gable and a thatched roof. The building has two ridge stacks and is one storey high with an attic.
The entrance includes a 20th-century boarded door set within an original four-centred arched door head, located to the left in a cross passage position. There are seven replacement casement windows of various sizes with leaded lights, along with three casement dormer windows.
Inside, the layout consists of three units, showcasing substantial timber framing with an interrupted tie beam in the south gable. There is a sealed ground floor diamond mullioned window and indications of other windows. The interior also features a two-bay open hall, although the display truss has been removed for 16th-century roll-moulded ceiling beams. A mantel beam has been inserted into the south wall of the hall, likely for a timber-framed chimney, and a 19th-century hearth has been added to the north wall. The smoke-blackened crown post roof is nearly intact, with plain crown posts and straight braces.
At the rear, there is a 17th-century wing that includes a large red brick stack in the chimney bay. The farmhouse was converted into cottages in the 19th century and underwent restoration around 1930.
