Description
Fairfax Kimbolton Auctions, located at 36 Kimbolton High Street, is a former coaching inn built shortly after 1685, with a 19th-century street facade. The building is two storeys high and features a cartway entrance leading to a courtyard, along with rear wings. It is constructed from local brick, which is rendered on the street side. Inside, there are substantial timber-framed trusses, and the roof is steeply pitched and covered with slate.
The building has three 19th-century brick chimney stacks and five horizontal sliding sash dormer windows with glazing bars and flat roofs. On the first floor, there are five paired hung sash windows with common architraves, along with two similar windows flanking the main entrance to the northwest, which has a modern door and flat canopy. Additionally, there are two plank doors with glazed lights leading to the cartway, and an inserted door on the southeast side (Fairfax).
The building is notable for being the home of Thomas Bloodworth, who was a surveyor for the 18th-century enclosures. A stone plaque on the rear elevation is dated 'EB 1640'.
