Description
No. 17 High Street is a house with an early 19th-century street facade that reflects two building periods. The southeast range includes four bays of an early timber-framed medieval hall house dating from around 1300, which is positioned at right angles and jettied out towards the street, featuring a side passage entry. There is a 15th-century stone end stack to the hall, which is partly demolished and has a hollow chamfered moulded arch. The original floor joints have been raised to a higher level, and there is a crown post in the truss above the stack, indicating a remnant of the original roof. The additional bays of the southeast range are timber-framed and possibly date from the 16th century.
To the northwest, there is a late 16th-century timber-framed street range that is two storeys high, retaining some original roof trusses beneath a late 19th-century roof. The street facade features rendered timber-frame construction, a plain tile roof with a 19th-century ridge stack, and five first-floor hung sash windows with glazing bars, including one blind window. The early 19th-century barrel shop window has glazing bars, and there is a five-panelled door with a rectangular fanlight, common architrave, slender pilasters, and dentil enrichment to the cornice. There is a side passage door on the right and a hung sash window with glazing bars on the left. Inside, there is a complete bolection moulded panelled room.
