Description
Montagu House is a late 17th century building with an early 19th century rendered facade, located on Kimbolton High Street. It features a 17th century rear wing and a 19th century addition at the angle of two ranges. The house is two storeys high with attics, constructed of local red brick with rusticated stone quoins on the street side, while the rear wing is made of gault brick and timber framing. The roofs are plain tiled, with a parapet, a gable on the south-east side, and a reduced end stack.
The building has an original deep moulded eaves cornice and mullions. There are three casement dormer windows and five first floor hung sash windows with glazing bars. The early 19th century shop windows, which have blinds, round-headed fanlights, and patterned glazing bars, flank a central doorway that also has a similar fanlight, though this has been sealed with a later window. The house door is half-glazed, and there is a small sash window on the north-west side, along with a plank passage door on the south-east side.
Inside, the house contains early 19th century chimney pieces and a staircase, as well as a sealed inglenook hearth in the rear wing. A fire insurance plaque is visible on the street facade.
