Description
This is a late 17th-century house and shop, located on Kimbolton High Street, and extended to include Nos. 2 and 4 St. Andrew’s Lane. It was built around the same time as ‘Montagu House’ to the southeast, and shares a common facade with it. The building follows an L-shape, with a two-storey range running parallel to St. Andrew’s Lane. The street facade is of local red brick, which has been painted and rendered, with rusticated stone quoins. It has plain tile roofs, some crested ridge tiles, and a tall ridge stack. A deep, moulded wooden eaves cornice featuring modillions runs along the top. A single dormer window with a sash is visible in the roof. The first floor has two sash windows with glazing bars. A late 19th-century shop window with glazing bars and a half-glazed door are located on the north-west side.
The facade to Nos. 2 and 4 St. Andrew’s Lane is also of painted brick, with a band separating the floors, and a plain tile roof with a ridge stack. A hung sash dormer window is present. Two sash windows with side lights and glazing bars are on each floor, the ground floor windows being set within segmental brick arches. A six-panelled door, within a moulded doorcase with panelled reveals and dentil decoration to the shaped cornice, is found at No. 2. A four-panelled door is at No. 4. The interior contains 19th-century chimney pieces and a fine geometric staircase.
