Description

The Black Bull Public House is a late 16th century or possibly earlier timber-framed and roughcast rendered building with a three-bay layout and a lobby entry plan. In the 18th century, the northern bay was encased in brick, and two gabled wings were added to the rear. A gault brick extension, consisting of one room over a now-sealed carriageway entry, was added to the south end in the late 18th or early 19th century. The building features a steeply pitched plain tile roof from the late 18th or early 19th century, which retains a 17th century red brick ridge stack with recessed panels between the shafts. It stands two storeys high and has open boxing and moulded architraves around four late 18th or early 19th century flush frame hung sash windows with glazing bars, along with a two-storeyed, splayed bay of similar date. The ground floor includes two similar sash windows and one 19th century casement window, while a 20th century window was inserted in the former carriageway entry when it was sealed. An early 19th century doorcase is located at the entry opposite the stack. Inside, the floor framing of the central bays and the hearth were inserted in the 17th century.
