Description

The Gables is a house dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with additions and alterations made in the 19th century. It features a whitewashed timber-frame and brick construction topped with a plain-tile roof and a brick stack on the left ridge. The building has a three-unit lobby-entry plan, with extensions to the left and rear, and stands two storeys tall.

On the first floor, there is a four-window range that includes a two-storey canted bay on either side of a square projection. This projection has a 2/2 sash window at the front and narrow single-light windows on the sides, with an additional 2/2 sash window to the far right. The square projection also features a panelled door with an overlight and similar sidelights. To the left end, there is a lean-to extension with an 18th-century two-panel door and HL hinges, and a 10/10 sash window to the right. To the left of this extension and at the rear of the main range, there is a two-storey extension with a horizontal sliding sash window above a 20th-century window. An end stack and a single-storey partly outbuilding extension are located beyond this.

At the rear of the main range, there is an early 19th-century two-storey extension that has 2/2 sash windows above two-light casements and a French window, with a slate roof covering this section.

Inside, the right-hand unit displays tall-panel framing, and there is a remodelled open fireplace that may have originally been used for a copper. The left unit contains an open fireplace with a bressumer that has been partly infilled. The interior also features four-panel and plank doors, a clasped purlin roof with various renewals, and framed partitions in the roof area.

The Gables is part of a significant group of listed buildings on High Street.
