Description
The Spaldwick War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1922, with later additions. It is made of sandstone and is located on the village green at the junction of Stow Road and High Street. The memorial features a sandstone Latin cross, which has a carved wreath attached to the north side of the cross head. The splayed foot of the cross shaft rises from a stone square plinth that sits on a square base.
On the south face of the plinth, there is an incised inscription that reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN SACRED MEMORY/ OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918" followed by six names. The north face of the plinth includes the inscription: "ALSO OF/ two names/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1939 – 1945," while the east face commemorates one name with the inscription: "WHO GAVE HIS LIFE IN KOREA/ APRIL 29TH 1953."
