Description
This is an early 18th-century house situated on the south-west side of East Street in Kimbolton. It features a symmetrical design with a side passage to the south-east, leading to a timber-framed rear wing. The house is two storeys high with attics. The street facade is rendered and has rusticated stone quoins, while the main structure is built of local brick. The roof is covered with plain tiles, and a central ridge stack was rebuilt in the 19th century. There are three modern dormer windows with flat roofs.
The front of the house has five recessed sash windows on the first floor, featuring glazing bars, with one blind window above the passageway. At ground level, a pair of sash windows with glazing bars, set in moulded wooden frames, flank the front door. The door itself is made of nine raised and fielded panels and is recessed within a doorcase featuring fluted pilasters, dentil enrichment to the cornice, and a triangular pediment. The door to the adjacent side passage has six raised and fielded panels, topped with a plain, rectangular fanlight.
Inside, two rooms are fully panelled with boxed beams; one room retains an original corner chimney piece, and the north-east room contains a built-in wine box. A good open string staircase with panelled walls follows the staircase’s rake. Original panelled doors and hinges are still in place throughout. The kitchen retains an inglenook hearth. The house is noted in Nikolaus Pevsner’s Buildings of England.
