Description
George House began as a coaching inn, incorporating two original timber-framed structures at right angles to the street around 1700. A common street facade was then added to these ranges. Further ranges were added in the 19th century. The building is constructed of rendered timber framing and local brick, with plain tiled roofs. It is two storeys high with attics, featuring a hipped roof to the south-east and two chimney stacks. Dormer windows are visible, with three flat roofs and horizontal sliding sash windows with glazing bars. The street facade has three first-floor horizontal sliding sash windows with glazing bars in moulded wooden frames. A central door is half-glazed and panelled, with panelled pilasters to an architrave, and a flat, bracketed canopy above. Flanking the door are two hung sash windows with thick glazing bars. Inside, an original closed string staircase remains, along with a complete bolection moulded panelled room on the first floor and 18th-century panelled doors. A 16th-century oak door leads to the garret. Original medieval rafters were reused in the north-east range, and an inserted chimney stack is also present.
