Description

Crosses Cottage and Keepers Cottage are two adjoining cottages that were originally one building, located in Abbots Ripton, Wennington. They date from the late 17th century and 18th century. The cottages are timber framed, with plaster rendering and a thatched roof made of long straw, featuring two ridge and eaves levels. The north east end has a half hipped roof. There is a shared red brick ridge stack from the 17th century and a 19th-century end stack at the north east end. The cottages form a single range with their end facing the road. Keepers Cottage is one storey with an attic, featuring two boxed dormers and four casement windows on the north west side. At the rear, there is a 19th-century boarded door and two 19th-century windows with small panes. Crosses Cottage is also one storey with an attic and has three dormers on the north west side.

Inside, the building was originally a three bay cottage, possibly designed with a lobby entry plan, which was subdivided and extended in the 18th century. There are back-to-back inglenook hearths. Keepers Cottage consists of two bays with a parlour at the end facing the road, while Crosses Cottage has two bays with intermediate bays that lack tie beams, supported by stop-chamfered main beams.
