Description
5 Market Place is a shop dating from the 18th century, with a 17th-century basement and a forecourt that may have been added in the 19th century. It is constructed of local brown brick and has four storeys with two bays. The building features a shallow parapet with stone copings. On the second and third floors, there are two recessed, sixteen-paned hung sash windows set in cambered gauged brick arches, along with two replacement casement windows at the first floor. The shop has good late 19th-century windows and retains an original glazed door. A brass cap on the plinth is engraved with 'PIANOES AND REPAIRS' and 'TUNING AND ORGANS'. Inside, above the shop, there is a notable Adam style chimney piece and a 17th-century ovolo moulded ceiling beam in the basement, which also includes a brick stair leading to the street. Other interior details are largely from the 19th century and include a linking passage to a converted 18th-century brick storehouse of two storeys at the rear.
