Description
Nos. 2 and 3 Market Street are early 19th-century shops built of local brown brick with plain tile mansard roofs. The buildings are two storeys high with attics, featuring four casement dormer windows and seven twelve-paned recessed hung sash windows, all set beneath cambered gauged brick arches and with stone cills. No. 2 has a modern shopfront at the ground floor, while No. 3 displays late 19th-century architraved shop windows and a glazed door with a rectangular fanlight. To the right of No. 3 is a four-panelled house door with a rectangular fanlight, plain pilasters, and an entablature. These buildings are significant as they create an important link between the Castle Estate and the Market Place. The land for Market Street was purchased by Joseph Medworth, and the street is included in his development plan.
