Description

Nos 19, 20, and 21 Market Street is a shop with accommodation above, built in the late 19th century. The building features painted brick under a slate roof and stands three storeys high with a seven-window range. The double-fronted shop fronts, dating from around 1910, include a left section with a central recessed glass door that has carved timber bottom and top rails in a vegetative Art Nouveau style, along with display windows on either side that feature carved bottom rails and open carved timber upper panels with floral and figurative carvings. The right shop front is simpler but includes thin moulded mullions and curving glass. Cambered brackets support late 20th-century fascia boards. The first and second floors are illuminated by 2/1 horned recessed sashes under cambered heads, with moulded jambs and raised impost bands. Some of the second-floor frames are blind, and all sashes are recessed under moulded lintels. The roof is gabled. Inside, the shop retail area has been updated in the late 20th century, but the left shop front remains an elaborate and very rare survival.
